One wouldn’t think the director of The Avengers, last year’s highest-grossing film, was out to ruin the career of a platinum-blond vampire with a soul.

But James Marsters, who played Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was convinced that was the case a decade ago when the show’s creator handed him a script for a musical episode — complete with dance numbers.

“We all thought he (Joss Whedon) had gone crazy,” the actor told 24 hours.

But Marsters, who appears this weekend at Fan Expo Vancouver, immediately changed his tune upon seeing rough footage of himself singing and dancing.

“It all just changed and we realized (Whedon) did know what he was doing.”

Ever since the cult comedy-horror series ended its run in 2003, the 50-year-old actor has spent much of his time guest starring on B.C.-shot sci-fi and fantasy series like Smallville, Supernatural and Caprica.

“Vancouver is one of my favourite cities in the world,” he said, adding Seattle, Paris and Barcelona are the only real competitors.

It’s part of the reason he’s so eager to hit up the West Coast for Fan Expo with Buffy co-star Juliet Landau, whose vampire character Drusilla sired Spike before the pair rampaged across the world for more than a century.

“It was like meeting a soul mate,” he said about their first TV appearance together. “We’ve always been great friends.”
