3:00 – 3:45PM PEN AND INK: MAKING AN OLD STYLE NEW AGAIN Taking cues from some past giants of illustration - Albrect Durer and Edward Gorey, Jason Lenox has been working to refine a unique pen and ink style that resembles the classic style of the art of wood engraving while giving the medium a slight modern twist. Currently he is putting this style to use in creating a comic book story based in the 1800’s - The Painted Ladies of San Quentin. Jason will be showing some of the historical pieces that he has been influenced by, and his current inking projects for comparison. Moreover, by utilizing the ELMO system, Jason will show some of his techniques put to use from stipling, linework and texturing so the attendees can put this style to use on their own projects. Best known for his work in Playboy since 1964, Doug Sneyd has over 450 full-page color cartoons published in the magazine. The Art of Doug Sneyd, published by Dark Horse Books, features 270 of his Playboy cartoons; the 248-page hardcover book was a 2012 Eisner Award nominee in the Best Humor Publication category. In addition, 14 Sneyd cartoons appear in Playboy: The Cartoons, which celebrates 50 years of Playboy’s distinctive brand of humor. Comics creators have responded in kind, using elements of Hip-Hop to give grounding to street-level storytelling, incorporating graffiti techniques into logo design and art styles, and using rap lyrics for context and content. He became well known during the 1980s after a series of starring roles in major Hollywood films, including Diner, Cocoon, Three Men and a Baby, Police Academy and Short Circuit. Mr. Guttenberg’s television credits include the critically acclaimed Miracle on Ice (1981), Something for Joe (1997). Moreover, he had a recurring role on the 2005-2006 season of fan-favorite Veronica Mars as Woody Goodman, a wealthy businessman and community leader. Mr. Guttenberg even got to ‘cut a rug’ when he participated in the 2008 Spring season of Dancing with the Stars. While still actively working in the entertainment industry Mr. Guttenberg has dedicated much to philanthropy. He founded Guttenhouse, an apartment complex in South Los Angeles he funded to accommodate young people after their graduation from foster child status. Moreover, as the Ambassador for Children’s Issues, as selected by the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Mr. Guttenberg has spearheaded Sight for Students, a $7-million program (in partnership with VSP and Altair Eyeglasses) that provides glasses for 50,000 underprivileged and visually challenged children throughout their school years.
