Viewers may know Kris Holden-Ried best as William Compton, on Showtime’s former hit series, The Tudors (2007), but he has been working nonstop for nearly two decades. Other credits include multi-episode arcs on Degrassi: The Next Generation, M.V.P. and The Bridge. His film credits include Santa Baby 2, K-19: The Widowmaker, Gossip, amongst others. Kris currently stars as Dyson in the Syfy series Lost Girl, where he portrays a very likable werewolf-shifter, working in the human world as a police detective. 3:00 – 3:45PM PEN AND INK: MAKING AN OLD STYLE NEW AGAIN
Taking cues from some past giants of illustration - Albrect Durer and Edward Gorey, Jason Lenox has been working to refine a unique pen and ink style that resembles the classic style of the art of wood engraving while giving the medium a slight modern twist. Currently he is putting this style to use in creating a comic book story based in the 1800’s - The Painted Ladies of San Quentin. Jason will be showing some of the historical pieces that he has been influenced by, and his current inking projects for comparison. Moreover, by utilizing the ELMO system, Jason will show some of his techniques put to use from stipling, linework and texturing so the attendees can put this style to use on their own projects. Everyone LOVES a good villain. They captivate your attention, do despicable things and leave you wanting more. Without them the hero would be just another character and usually, a really annoying one at that! But perhaps there is a way we can create a hero that give us the same visceral reaction those magnificently evil doers have a monopoly on. We’re going to dig deep into that love-to-hate archetype, see what traits make those classic evildoers become the best part of a story. Michael Rooker, who burst on the scene more than two decades ago in the title role in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, also had key roles in Sylvester Stallone’s 1993 hit Cliffhanger, and the Denzel Washington/Angelina Jolie blockbuster The Bone Collector in 1999, as well as popular films such as Mississippi Burning (1988), Sea of Love (1989) and Days of Thunder (1990). While many have fit the brute, villain and psychopath type, he has also shown versatility in numerous “good guy” roles in his career, none more apparent than the love-hate fan favorite Merle Dixon on AMC’s acclaimed series, The Walking Dead. Moreover, Rooker’s star continues to rise as he was recently the newest addition to Marvel’s next big super hero team, Guardians of the Galaxy. Having started out as a book and magazine illustrator, Mr. Sneyd has also had a successful career as a syndicated cartoonist; his topical Doug Sneyd and SCOOPS cartoons ran for nearly 20 years in newspapers throughout the U.S. and Canada. Best known for his work in Playboy since 1964, Doug Sneyd has over 450 full-page color cartoons published in the magazine. The Art of Doug Sneyd, published by Dark Horse Books, features 270 of his Playboy cartoons; the 248-page hardcover book was a 2012 Eisner Award nominee in the Best Humor Publication category. In addition, 14 Sneyd cartoons appear in Playboy: The Cartoons, which celebrates 50 years of Playboy’s distinctive brand of humor. Since its earliest days, Hip-Hop culture has been linked to comic books: graffiti and album covers utilize superhero imagery, rappers adopt secret identities and grandiose aliases, artists use the vocabulary of comics to help forge a new urban culture. Comics creators have responded in kind, using elements of Hip-Hop to give grounding to street-level storytelling, incorporating graffiti techniques into logo design and art styles, and using rap lyrics for context and content. Both forms thrive on excitement and energy, inspire passionate fanbases, and have risen from modest beginnings to achieve global recognition. Here, Patrick Redd, editor of Depth of Field Magazine, brings together musical visionaries, visual artists, and other special guests from the comic and music industries to celebrate the possibilities in combining these worlds, discuss how forms have intersected over the last four decades, and look ahead toward the future. Filmmaker Vlad Yudin has brought together an anticipated graphic novel,Head Smash, tied into a screenplay he’s developing for next year. The story revolves around Smash, an orphan who’s brought up by a powerful and corrupt man and who finds himself squaring off against that man and his organization after his wife and unborn child disappear. Set in a “pre-apocalyptic” future, the story follows the physically-gifted Smash in his effort to rescue the ones he loves. Steven Robert “Steve” Guttenberg is an American actor and comedian. He became well known during the 1980s after a series of starring roles in major Hollywood films, including Diner, Cocoon, Three Men and a Baby, Police Academy and Short Circuit. Mr. Guttenberg’s television credits include the critically acclaimed Miracle on Ice (1981), Something for Joe (1997). Moreover, he had a recurring role on the 2005-2006 season of fan-favorite Veronica Mars as Woody Goodman, a wealthy businessman and community leader. Mr. Guttenberg even got to ‘cut a rug’ when he participated in the 2008 Spring season of Dancing with the Stars. While still actively working in the entertainment industry Mr. Guttenberg has dedicated much to philanthropy. He founded Guttenhouse, an apartment complex in South Los Angeles he funded to accommodate young people after their graduation from foster child status. Moreover, as the Ambassador for Children’s Issues, as selected by the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Mr. Guttenberg has spearheaded Sight for Students, a $7-million program (in partnership with VSP and Altair Eyeglasses) that provides glasses for 50,000 underprivileged and visually challenged children throughout their school years.
