75 years ago, as fateful events that would lead to the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 were coming together in Europe, the U.S.A. was experiencing an explosion of popular culture. In 1939, Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27; Timely (later Marvel) Comics released Marvel Comics #1, showcasing the first Marvel superheroes, Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch; and Hollywood produced classic films including The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind and Stagecoach. Discussing historical and cultural factors that made that year so important is a panel including Dr. Alex Lubet (University of Minnesota) and Danny Fingeroth (Disguised as Clark Kent: Jews, Comics, and the Creation of the Superhero.) The Bat Whispers is an early Talkie and widescreen film from 1930 about a master criminal known as The Bat. It's noir, yet strangely comical, and served as a major influence on Bob Kane in the creation of the character of Batman, and generations later on the work of Tim Burton, who used the swooping camerawork and the heavy use of miniature sets as part of the template for his Batman films. The new score, composed by Chris Strouth and performed live exclusively for Minneapolis Comic Con with his New Modedern group Paris1919 (Tim Ritter, Mykl Westbrooks) gives the film a darkly haunting soundscape. Join professional time travelers Terry and Oliver Holler as they take you BACK through their incredible journey to find one's Density, then inspire you forward into the FUTURE! Comics and graphic novels have come into their own as subjects worthy of—indeed, demanding—attention from academia. Historians and cultural theorists teach courses, hold conferences, and publish books on various aspects of sequential art colleges and universities teach courses in comics as literature and social history as well as how to make them. Here, to give an overview of various ideas about and approaches to comics studies are a cross-section of comics scholars and teachers, including Barbara Schulz (Minneapolis College of Art and Design—MCAD—Comic Art Degree Program). The panel is moderated by Danny Fingeroth (The Rough Guide to Graphic Novels.)

12:15 - 1:00PM ONE-ON-ONE WITH THE DOCTOR: MATT SMITH
English TV actor, thespian and film director, Matt Smith, is joining Minneapolis Comic Con for a rare, inside look into his journey as actor. Best known for his portrayal of the wibbly-wobbly Doctor in the BBC's Doctor Who, Matt Smith has not only left his indelible mark on the 50-year-old legacy, but also taught us that bow ties and fish sticks with custard are cool. Smith began carrying the mantel of Time Lord back in 2009 as the youngest Doctor in the show's history, and just retired his sonic screwdriver during the sentimental and heartfelt Christmas Special episode this past December. Join us for this 45-minute discussion with Matt Smith as he shares his favorite memories of traveling through time, his growth as an actor over the past 4 years, and how being the iconic Doctor has changed his life. 12:30 – 1:15PM THE ART OF ANIMATION PRODUCTION WITH ANIMATOR/DIRECTOR TOM COOK
Wizard World is proud to present world-renown animator Tom Cook (Tarzan; Flash Gordon; He-Man and the Masters of the Universe; She-Ra Princess of Power) to Minneapolis! This panel will be a demonstration of the steps taken to bring an idea from script to screen. Cook will begin with a short story of how he became an animator back in the late 1970s and then describe the different departments in an animation studio and what they do to move the development of the cartoon forward. Tom will have a few scenes he has worked on over the years on video and then will open the floor for questions about either the process or any other question you may have. Calling all independent filmmakers and fans of independent film: Wizard World is proud to present the Wizard World Film Festival! Here, filmmakers from all around the world will compete for fame, glory and great prizes, such as priceless VIP Experiences, exclusive autographs and photo ops with celebrities. The latest and greatest in independent film will be screened all weekend, with a red carpet awards ceremony to be held at the conclusion of the festival. Accomplished comics writers Zander Cannon (Top Ten; The Tick,) Erik Burnham (Scarlet Spider; Ghostbusters,) Zak Sally (Sammy the Mouse; Recidivist) and Danny Fingeroth (Deadly Foes of Spider-Man; How to Create Comics from Script to Print) show and tell you how to write comics and graphic novels, going from initial idea to outline to script to finished story.
